Random numbers are idealized mathematical objects that exist in an abstract world and have interesting properties. They are also things that, empirically, can be used to describe data to be measured that is unpredictable from the information we have access to at any given time.
One of the most powerful properties of random numbers arises from the fact that they like to clump together. When we use random numbers, for example, to populate a plane, they will leave gaps and voids.
