It’s not quite as harsh as Laplace usually, and the reason I use the GED a lot is that it can parametrically accommodate both the Laplace and the Normal.

Student’s t often gives good fits, but the problem is the higher order moments don’t exist and that interferes with your ability to analyze investment strategy analytically.
